Anyone who sought out, or has owned the F-150 since it made the switch to aluminum skin and steel bones back in 2015 will probably remember the skepticism surrounding the then-new truck. Three model years on, and it’s clear that the Blue Oval wasn’t done revolutionizing their bestselling model’s offerings. Now, it’s paying off in a big way with the 2018 Ford F-150, which was just named MotorTrend’s “Truck of the Year.”
In their article highlighting the 2018 F-150’s win, MotorTrend highlighted just how big a test debuting the original aluminum-bodied truck was. And while it was a runner up back in 2015, they decided to let the F-150 come into its own before giving it the acclaim it had earned.
The 2018 refresh offered just that. With updates to every engine, including an all-new base engine, the latest F-150 is more than an innovative statement. Its 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, for example, has more than the acclaim of being one of the only range-topping gasoline engines around, but provides best-in-class 470 lb-ft of torque, and when properly outfitted, tow 13,200 lbs. That latter figure is a new benchmark for the half-ton truck class.
But as MotorTrend discovered, the F-150’s appeal went beyond its class-topping abilities. The smooth power of the all-new 3.3-liter V6. They even noted that it had little quibble being hitched to a 5,000 pound trailer in even base XL guise. Another favorite is the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, which MotorTrend tested in a Lariat pickup. With 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, reviewers were impressed by how much power such a small engine could put out. Braking on the Lariat also saw high marks, with a 119 foot stopping distance from sixty observed in testing.
